About FWPM

Learn about our mission, vision, values, and the team behind the Foundation for Widening Participation in Medicine.

Our Story

The Foundation for Widening Participation in Medicine (FWPM) was established in 2024 by a group of medical students who recognized the persistent barriers facing many talented individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in accessing medical education.

Having experienced these challenges firsthand or witnessed them among their colleagues, our founders were committed to creating a dedicated organization that would address these issues systematically and holistically.

What began as a small mentoring initiative has grown into a comprehensive foundation offering multiple programmes across the UK, supporting individuals at every stage of their medical education journey from school students first considering medicine as a career to junior doctors navigating their early professional years.

Our work with schools forms a cornerstone of our approach. We partner with secondary schools across the UK, with a particular focus on those in areas with historically low progression rates to medical education. Through these partnerships, we deliver tailored programmes including:

  • Interactive Workshops: Hands-on sessions that introduce students to medical concepts, clinical skills, and the realities of a career in healthcare.
  • Curriculum Support: Working with science departments to enhance teaching of medically-relevant topics and highlight pathways into healthcare careers.
  • Long-term Engagement: Multi-year programmes that follow students from Year 9 through to university applications, providing consistent support and guidance.

We also collaborate with medical schools to develop more inclusive admissions processes and support programmes for students from underrepresented backgrounds once they begin their medical education.
